Essex County, one of the four original counties when the Massachusetts Bay Colony started the creating counties in 1643. Once serving as a major port, Gloucester's fishing industry is alive and well. The Merrimack River that runs through the county was the catalyst for an explosion of innovation during the Industrial Revolution.
